Ann Arbor, Michigan (Dec. 14, 2021) — Adaptive Energy, LLC, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) for low-watt backup and offgrid power has secured an order of 400 Performer Series P250i SOFC systems from rail partner RedHawk Energy Systems, LLC. This is Adaptive Energy’s second major contract in 2021 from this long-standing partner with whom it has worked for nearly a decade.
“Railway customers need dependable access to power to ensure operations run safely and smoothly, which is why so many are depending on SOFCs,” Adaptive Energy CEO Michael Edison said. “This order reinforces RedHawk Energy’s commitment to improving disaster resilience by keeping crossings and signals powered during grid outages.”
The past year saw an increase in demand for propane-powered fuel cells from RedHawk Energy’s customers that want to harden rail crossings, signals and other wayside assets with a dependable and efficient backup solution for 24/7 uptime. This will leave these rail customers better positioned for — and more resilient to — extreme weather events including ice storms, wind storms, wildfires and hurricanes.

Instead of babysitting legacy gas/diesel generators that require constant refueling and routine maintenance, the P250i can provide days, weeks and even months of reliable power with minimal personnel involvement.”
Running on commercially available propane, the Performer Series P250i SOFC delivers 24/7 extended-run backup or hybrid supplemental power to charge battery banks at railway crossings, signals and other wayside assets. The SOFC offers days, weeks and even months of reliable power — instead of just hours from more traditional battery-only or gas generator backup systems.
